In the early days, Chinese settlers often erected traditional \u201cTengkong Altars\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heavenly Lord Altars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) in the countryside to worship the Jade Emperor. However, due to national development policies and land relocation, many temples and devotees who worshipped various deities were compelled to move or cease their activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hence, with the consent and cooperation of the temples involved, the Tampines Combined Temple was established, incorporating the Tengkong Altar as part of its structure under the devotion of the Jade Emperor\u2019s followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the first Tengkong Altar General Assembly convened, it was during a period when government land acquisition was taking place. After careful discussions and multiple meetings between the representatives of the two Tengkong Altars and the temple\u2019s management committee, it was unanimously agreed\u2014with government approval and the support of the community\u2014that the altars would be merged into the Tampines Combined Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since its establishment, the devotees of the Tengkong Altar have continued to uphold the ancient traditions and rituals of the historic Tengkong temples, faithfully offering prayers for peace and prosperity of the nation. <p><b>Introduction to Foo An Dian (Hock Ann Temple)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore in 1943, a villager named <\/span><b>Mr. Lim Chee Huat (<\/b><b>\u6797\u6c60\u53d1<\/b><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from <\/span><b>Tampines 11\u00bd Milestone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (commonly known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sam Yat Lik<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) began worshipping <\/span><b>Zhu Tian Da Ren (<\/b><b>\u6731\u5929\u5927\u4eba<\/b><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at his home.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At that time, the region was plagued by unrest and instability. With hearts filled with anxiety, Mr. Lim prayed earnestly for divine protection over his family and community \u2014 for peace, harmony, and favourable weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thus, a simple <\/span><b>attap-roof shrine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was established. Mr. Lim took responsibility as the caretaker and temple host. When the spirit of <\/span><b>Zhu Tian Da Ren<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> descended and manifested through the altar medium, the deity\u2019s power and blessings became widely recognized. Local villagers began visiting to seek divine guidance and protection, and the number of devotees gradually increased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the land on which the shrine stood was <\/span><b>leased property<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple had to be dismantled after the lease expired. Devotees, unwilling to lose their place of worship, temporarily enshrined the statue of <\/span><b>Zhu Tian Da Ren<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a nearby wooden house and continued their prayers there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The original temple was situated beside <\/span><b>three small rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, surrounded by <\/span><b>coconut groves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>paddy fields<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, creating a tranquil and scenic environment. According to accounts, Zhu Tian Da Ren\u2019s divine power was extraordinary, and countless devotees\u2019 prayers were miraculously answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to the growing number of followers, the villagers collectively raised funds in the <\/span><b>1950s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to rebuild the temple. However, as the land remained under temporary lease, the deity continued to be worshipped in the same modest premises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In those early years, villagers affectionately referred to the temple as <\/span><b>Zhu Tian Da Ren Gong (<\/b><b>\u6731\u5929\u5927\u4eba\u5bab<\/b><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Each year, on the <\/span><b>10th day of the 10th lunar month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a grand ceremony was held to celebrate the deity\u2019s birthday. Rituals such as <\/span><b>divine consultation (bua pueh)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>blessing prayers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>peace offerings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were conducted to seek protection, prosperity, and harmony. At that time, the temple charged a small symbolic rental of <\/span><b>30 cents per day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and devotees could book the space for a maximum of three days. This practice continued until <\/span><b>1979<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, when the rental arrangement was discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Originally built from timber, <\/span><b>Foo An Dian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> underwent reconstruction in <\/span><b>1974<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> under the supervision of Mr. Lim Chee Huat. The rebuilding cost approximately <\/span><b>$30,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, transforming the structure into a sturdier concrete shrine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the government began developing <\/span><b>Tampines New Town<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><b>1979<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple land was acquired for redevelopment. In <\/span><b>1982<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple was relocated to the newly constructed <\/span><b>Tampines Combined Temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where the statue of Zhu Tian Da Ren and the devotees were formally enshrined together with other deities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Importantly, the <\/span><b>original Foo An Dian temple door<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was preserved and remains a part of the temple today. A new statue of <\/span><b>Zhu Tian Da Ren<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was also consecrated, as the deity\u2019s divine manifestation was said to be especially auspicious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1986<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a special <\/span><b>Foo An Dian Sub-Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was formed under the <\/span><b>Tampines Combined Temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, comprising:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Mr. Lim Chee Huat, Mr. Ng (Auspicious Star Pavilion) \u2013 Introduction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many decades ago, a Burmese devotee brought with him <\/span><b>three sacred statues of the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin Bodhisattva)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to Singapore and enshrined them at his residence in <\/span><b>Lam Lake (Lin Hu) Village<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, within <\/span><b>Paya Lebar (Bak Ku Li Ta area, Chulan Hong Qing)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The temple began as a <\/span><b>simple attap-roof shrine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, later expanded around <\/span><b>1918<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> into a zinc-roof structure. From then on, the temple held annual celebrations from the <\/span><b>18th to the 20th days of the 2nd lunar month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, marking the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birthday of the South Sea Guanyin Bodhisattva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During these days, devotees offered thanksgiving prayers and staged <\/span><b>traditional puppet shows<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to honour the Goddess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Growth and Succession<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the <\/span><b>Japanese Occupation ended in 1945<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Singapore was liberated, and the British forces returned. In <\/span><b>1946<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple\u2019s founder passed away, and his son, <\/span><b>Mr. Lim Tong Poh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, succeeded him as the new temple caretaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under his leadership, the temple expanded its activities and popularity. On the deity\u2019s holy days, the temple began hosting <\/span><b>Hokkien opera performances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in place of puppet shows. These annual celebrations attracted large crowds \u2014 men, women, and children from surrounding villages came in droves to offer incense and prayers, turning the festivities into a grand local event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, upon the passing of Mr. Lim Tong Poh, his son <\/span><b>Mr. Lim See Seng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> inherited the responsibility of overseeing temple affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Relocation and Establishment in Tampines<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1982<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, due to the government\u2019s expansion of <\/span><b>Paya Lebar Airport<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple\u2019s land was acquired for redevelopment. With time running short and no immediate site available for rebuilding, the <\/span><b>statue of the South Sea Guanyin Bodhisattva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was temporarily relocated and enshrined at <\/span><b>Ann Hock Temple (An Dian) along Jalan Fochow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for five to six years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Subsequently, <\/span><b>Mr. Chua Kian Heng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Mr. Lim Hu Bao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> liaised with other temple leaders from the Tampines area to form an association. Together, they approached community leaders to acquire a new plot of land, eventually joining the <\/span><b>Tampines Combined Temple organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr. <\/span><b>Lim Hu Bao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> continued serving as the temple chairman of <\/span><b>\u5409\u661f\u4ead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with his sons \u2014 <\/span><b>Lim Cheong Huat (eldest)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Lim Khun Yam (second)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Lim Cheong Boon (youngest)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 assisting in temple management and <p><b>Shun Xing Ancient Temple \u2013 Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Long ago, before Tampines became developed, the area was covered by dense forests and scattered rural villages. According to local legend, one day a villager went up the hill to collect firewood when suddenly a fierce tiger appeared before him. The animal bared its teeth and leapt forward to attack. Terrified, the man pleaded for his life, promising to bring it offerings from the village below if it spared him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Surprisingly, the tiger stopped its attack and followed the villager down the hill. When the man reached his village, he reported the strange encounter to the village head, who ordered that a pig\u2019s head be offered to appease the creature. However, when the offering was prepared and brought to the site, the tiger had already vanished \u2014 leaving only tufts of grey fur scattered on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Soon after, the village head dreamt of a divine being who revealed that the tiger was in fact a manifestation of <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di (Great Emperor Hong Xian)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The villagers then built a small shrine at the spot to worship him, marking the beginning of what would later become the <\/span><b>Shun Xing Ancient Temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Origins of the Temple<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the years that followed, villagers reported seeing a spirit riding a white tiger in the area, which they believed to be <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Out of reverence, they constructed a proper temple and named it <\/span><b>Shun Xing Gu Miao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shun Xing Ancient Temple<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In local Chinese folk belief, <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a divine protector and healer, revered as a deity of medicine and compassion. He is said to cure the sick, ward off disasters, and bring peace to those who pray sincerely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1851 (the first year of Emperor Xianfeng)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a devotee named <\/span><b>Chen Chen Qing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from <\/span><b>Shao Ping, Si Zhou Township<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (present-day Fujian Province) rebuilt the temple in gratitude for divine protection, dedicating it to <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By <\/span><b>1883 (Guangxu 9th year)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, most villagers in the area were immigrants from <\/span><b>Yongchun, Fujian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who firmly believed that Hong Xian Da Di had safeguarded their journey and settlement in Singapore. Out of gratitude, they rebuilt the temple and continued the worship with deep devotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is said that over seventy years ago, the deity descended and revealed his presence near a banyan tree in the village. He instructed devotees to set up an altar at that location for prayers and offerings. The faithful followed his command, rebuilt the temple, and sculpted a new golden statue of <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which was then ceremonially consecrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Growth and Devotion<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By <\/span><b>1934 (Republic Year 23)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple community began organising grand processions and celebrations for the deity\u2019s birthday, which is observed annually on the <\/span><b>21st day of the 11th lunar month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. On this day, devotees hold elaborate rituals for peace, blessings, and protection, and the temple is filled with vibrant incense offerings and festive joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year on this sacred day, villagers prepare offerings and perform thanksgiving ceremonies in honour of <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The temple\u2019s incense has never ceased, and it continues to be a spiritual centre for countless devotees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When caretaker <\/span><b>Mr. Lim Si Sheng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> passed away in <\/span><b>1935<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the temple management was succeeded by <\/span><b>Mr. Tan Yi Ming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. After Mr. Tan\u2019s passing in the 1970s, his responsibilities were taken over by <\/span><b>Mr. Tan Ju Zhen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and his wife, who diligently managed the temple\u2019s affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The temple leadership was later joined by brothers <\/span><b>Mr. Tan Bai Nian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Mr. Tan Jin Bin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who continued to oversee religious activities and maintain the temple\u2019s operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1968<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the original statue of <\/span><b>Hong Xian Da Di<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was stolen. The community came together to raise funds, sculpt a new image, and reinstate the deity. The new statue was enshrined in a grand ceremony on the <\/span><b>21st day of the 11th lunar month, 1969<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Relocation and Modern Era<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>December 1984<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, due to government redevelopment plans, the Shun Xing Temple had to be relocated. With the strong support of temple caretakers <\/span><b>Mr. and Mrs. Tan Ju Zhen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and devoted committee members including <\/span><b>Tan Bai Nian, Tan Jin Bin, Tan You Cai, Tan Guo Shun, Tan Guo Qing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and others, the community successfully raised funds and built a new temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By <\/span><b>1985<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the new temple was completed, and a grand relocation ceremony was held on the <\/span><b>21st day of the 11th lunar month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, attended by large crowds of devotees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On <\/span><b>5 November 1991<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Committee<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1994<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the Tampines Combined Temple Committee resolved to form the <\/span><b>Shun Xing Temple Subcommittee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to enhance management and preserve the temple\u2019s heritage.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The subcommittee comprised <\/span><b>Tan Tian Cai, Tan Guo Qing, Tan Guo Shun, Tan Jin Cai, Tan Jin Bin, Tan You Cai, Tan Guo Hui, Tan Yao Zhong, Tan Yi Sheng<\/b><span Altar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><b>1920<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with funds collected from clan members. He commissioned the carving of the golden effigy of <\/span><b>Lord Cai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and enshrined it in a rented two-storey shophouse along <\/span><b>Taylock Street (formerly known as Five Stone Street)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, dedicating the entire second floor as a temple hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every year, on the <\/span><b>18th day of the 10th lunar month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, devotees celebrated the <\/span><b>Birthday of Lord Cai Fu Wang Ye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with an opera performance as an offering of thanksgiving to the deity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During this time, the altar also served as a rest home for newly arrived Cai clan members from China who had no relatives or acquaintances in Singapore, offering them temporary lodging and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Relocations and Rebuilding<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, due to financial constraints, the altar was temporarily moved to Mr. Cai Hao\u2019s residence at <\/span><b>Zion Road<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where the annual celebrations continued as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>1934<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the altar relocated again to the <\/span><b>third floor of a shophouse on Chang Tai Street (then known as Kaba Street)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. However, due to a shortage of funds, it moved once more in <\/span><b>December 1935<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>Pearl Street (also known as Tofu Street)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, managed by <\/span><b>Mr. Cai Wenjie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Mr. Cai Duqi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the <\/span><b>Japanese Occupation (1942)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, all temple activities ceased when Japanese forces invaded Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the war ended, in <\/span><b>1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Mr. Cai Wenjie and Mr. Cai Duqi resumed leadership and raised funds to rent the third floor of <\/span><b>105-B Amoy Street<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, renaming the temple <\/span><b>Jiyang Tang (Hall of Benevolence)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The original temple was located in a zinc-roofed house in Kampong Jiutiao Shi, Tampines. The temple\u2019s founder, Yao Lishen, driven by a spirit of compassion and a desire to help the people, initiated the establishment of Ciling Temple. Although it arose during the old social climate, it was built upon the kampong (village) spirit of sincerity, warmth, and unity. Every year on the 23rd day of the 7th lunar month, the temple celebrates the birthday of Saint Zhang Gong by hiring a Fujian opera troupe to perform opera shows for two to three days.
